Mask without eyes

Dionysus is usually evoked by a mask without eyes: the god is invisible; only the mask is visible as the flag moved by the wind is not the wind but it evokes it. The one who brings the mask and drinks wine might become an avatar of the god. Dionysus is the father of comedy and tragedy, and he also protects actors. Comedies and tragedies used to be a means of Dionysus’s cult with a peculiar artistic form: the dithyramb.
